Buying a band saw advice?
I’m looking to get a tabletop-sized band saw for cutting plastics (mostly acrylics, up to 2 inches thick) and light metals (aluminum up to 0.25 inches thick) and was wondering if anyone out there could give some advice. All the band saws at home depot/lowes seem to be geared towards cutting wood, and I’m not too sure on what type of blades I should be using. What size/power/type of saw should I be looking at for these materials?

Suggestion by Dunbar Pappy
This may be a function more of “teeth per inch” (TPI) of the blade, rather than the saw; and to some extent, the speed of the blade.
Plastics are more brittle, and would crack, chip, or ‘grab’ the blade (especially pronounced for very thin material) , if using a wider gaped wood purpose blade.
To remedy that issue, you need to speed up the blade; slow the ‘feed’ rate of the part; or get a blade with more TIP (if optional motor speeds are not available).
Often these 3 aspects just become learned by using the saw & material: it’s OJT (on the job training).
Maybe when making your choice, you could see about higher TPI blades.
Note also, some plastics tend to build a slight static charge and the ‘chips’ stick to everything, so have a vacuum cleaner handy if it’s in the house.
Also note; when cutting very thin (metal or plastic) it helps (failing any other method) to ‘sandwich’ the material between 2 pieces of wood. this keeps the blade from grabbing the material; reducing lost or valuable subject material.

Suggestion by kravdraa
Use a 12-14 tooth per inch blade (TPI).
Experiment on some scrap, run he blade at a moderate speed if there is an adjustment.
I’m in northern VA, you could send it to me for cutting. I ahve an industrial (DoAll) band saw that cuts anything.
Eric
