Do I have to be strong to use power tools?
So I’m taking “introduction to green construction” (it’s like wood shop, but geared towards actual construction), and we’ll be using skil saws and stuff. I’m 15, a girl, a total couch potato, short, and I’m not strong (at all). But that doesn’t matter too much right?

No way sister. I am a female and in construction. The only way do do a good job is having the tools you need. Women do not have alot of upper body strength and that where power tools come in real handy. Just read all instructions and safety first and practice just holding them and feeling the power behind each tool and then practice on something that can be thrown away. Getting the feel for a power tool is half the battle. Let the tool do the work for you. Get a firm grip and watch what happens.

You’ll be fine, arm and hand strength grow as you learn. Please be careful, power tools can hurt people pretty fast. Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate, and don’t do anything with a power tool till you’re sure you know how to do it. Safety first is the rule in construction.

How thick can a 10″ Table saw cut in one pass?
I want to buy a 10″ table saw. I was wondering what is an average thickness that this saw will cut. Can it cut something like a 4″X4″ in one cut? Thx

10″ is the diameter of the blade. That means the distance from the center of the blade to the edge is 5″. Given that you can’t cut all the way to the center of the blade, a 4″ deep cut is pushing the limit at best.

No. A 10″ table saw will not cut 3.5″ depth in one pass. Most will do about 3″ or a bit better. You would need to flip the 4×4 stock over and make another pass.

Some 10″ saws will cut 3-1/2″ in one pass. It depends on the drive type. I have used many large shop-saws that are belt driven which do not make the 3-1/2″ cut in one pass but I have used other portable saws that are direct drive (Makita in particular) that will cut to 3-5/8″ in one pass.

I always found it amusing that a 5hp 3-phase shop saw won’t cut through 4X but my little 110V 15 A portable will!

How can I make a table saw that runs on 220 power and make it run on home 110 current?

How much is a 10″ Delta Table Saw with a broken motor worth?
My parents have a 10″ Delta Table Saw that they are trying to sell. It’s about 9 or 10 years old and wasn’t used very much. It hasn’t been used at all in the last 2 or 3 years and now has a frozen motor. I’m trying to help them sell it but have no idea what to ask for it or if I should just give it away to anyone who is willing to haul it off. Anyone have any suggestions???

First off, Delta is not high quality. Secondly, with a useless motor, it is probably worth no more than $ 20 to $ 50 bucks.

Harbor Tool usually have motors for these saws…..Cost…About $ 125.00….See if you can find someone that can disassemble the old motor…It may just be clogged with sawdust or rust

It’s worth the price of scrap metal. Maybe you could take the motor to someone who could unseize it. It’s not worth the cost of putting a new motor in it.

Hi There,

A new Delta 10 inch table saw will cost $ 400- on more depending upon the model.

If you can remove the motor, take it to an electric motor repair shop and they can fix it.
Unsticking a frozen motor is sometimes not difficult ( or expensive).

Once the motor has been repaired you probably can sell the saw for $ 150- to $ 200-.
Again that will depend upon the condition and appearance of the saw.

Look in the telephone book for “electric motor repair” to repair the motor. A good motor shop can repair any motor just get an estimate.
Note: a new motor will cost about $ 180-.

While looking on the internet I noticed most of the retailers of 10 inch table saws were “out of stock”. I do not know why that is but perhaps there is a shortage.

I’m going to replace a laminate countertop and have a question about the type of saw/blade to use…?
I’m replacing an old laminate countertop with a new one. I found one that I like, but it has an integrated backsplash- that I don’t need fo this application. So, I’m going to cut off the backsplash about 2 inches from where it curves up. That will leave me with a nice rectangular piece.
I have two choices for saws- a standard, corded 7 1/2 inch Skillsaw and a 4 1/2 inch cordless circular saw (Ryobi). I have used the cordless Ryobi quite often for a variety of projects- and I really prefer it due to the light weight- but it obviously doesn’t have as much power or RPM as the Skillsaw. Assuming that I use a similar-toothed blade, do you think I can expect satisfactory results using the cordless? Also, better to cut on the laminate surface or to flip it over and cut from the bottom up? Less chance for chipping one way or the other?

Use the Skilsaw, and cut it from the back to avoid chipping. You can clamp a straightedge along the cut to keep it straight. Otherwise, cut it shy of the line and finish with a belt sander. Hope this helps.

Where can I buy a scroll saw that will automatically cut the same pattern over and over?
We are starting up a business and need to cut many small, fairly simple wood shapes for crafts that we can’t find already pre-cut. But tracing and cutting the same pattern over and over with a scroll saw can be very tedious. We’ve considered outsourcing the cutting, but think it may be more cost effective just to buy our own machine. We’re sure there’s a machine where you can enter a pattern and it can cut it over and over for you, but we have no idea what it’s called or where to find one. We’re willing to invest the money for the machine, but we don’t know where to start. Any ideas?

Not sure that it is exactly what you are looking for but the Craftsman CompuCarve Computer-Controlled Compact Woodworking Machine sells for about $ 2000, it hooks up to a PC for getting the pattern that you want cut and then will make the cuts. craftsman.com

What you need is a CNC machine and not a scroll saw. There are many types and you will need to do a web search for the one that is right for you. Expect to spend in excess of $ 4,000 for a commercial grade machine.

You should be able to get the blade guard from Sears Parts and Service. Sears is the parent company of Craftsman Tools. Sears operates a number of Sears Parts and Service shops around the US. I have one less than a mile from my house. They sell both new and reconditioned parts, and they are a separate division from the Sears retail department stores. You can also buy online, the link is below. But the site is down for sched maintenance until 6am Sunday.
