Why do saw blades get dull?

Why do saw blades get dull?
If the steel in the saw blade is the harder than the wood that it cuts, then why does the saw blade eventually get dull?

Suggestion by ApplianceGuy
Even though the steel is harder than the wood you still have friction and the steel will eventually wear away.

Suggestion by linlyons
and there is foreign stuff (eg. mud) on the lumber that’s being cut.

Just like your lawn mower, u whip around at 5800 plus RPM’s and hit something u get dull. Would u want a surgeon to operate on u with a 6x previous blade? U proably would only use 3-4 blades to do an average house. About 30-40 dollars, cheap price for a quick cut and clean cut.

just like anything that is used friction and heat cause the dullness. just like razors get dull shaving hair.

Are factory chain-saw blades junk or is it me?
I bought a Husqvarna 455 Rancher and I love it as a first chainsaw. I notice though, that the blade gets dull after a good amount of sawing. I purchase a file with a guide to resharpen, and have successfully sharpened it a few times. It seems to dull quicker than I would like. Do you think I am not sharpening it enough, or are factory chains junk? Thanks for answering.

Suggestion by frak1a12345
It is you. Factory blades are super sharp and run great. When you resharpen them you can never get the same sharpness that it had when it was new. Close maybe. Get used to it–you have unreasonable expectations.

Suggestion by Mr Fixit
Usually the factory blades have anti kick back feature…If you are good with the saw and extra careful, you may want a chipper chain

Suggestion by Charlie F
Depending on the wood your cutting all chain saw blades dull fast. In an 8 hour day your going to sharpen it at least once.

Suggestion by CALLUM W
you said it your self the blades get dull after a good amount of use !!!.
factory chains are 100ths of a mm accurate. its your sharpening no offence intended. maby try and add a bit more presure to the file or a littel less depending. it is hard to get it right you will try it all diffrent ways going at the blade hell for leather, a tip take the same amount off each blade so when its totally blunt they are all blunt togeather. i know this is going to sound daft but are you filing both blades?, try buying a better set of guides and a better file i know a good work man never blames his tools but it does help the job if you have got descent 1′s

Makes Clean Finish Cuts in Wood and Delicate Molding
Achieving attractive results when working with fine finish material is all about clean, accurate cuts. The Freud D1060X makes this process easy, fast, and precise. To save you time, most cuts made by this blade require little to no sanding.

Trim carpenters, fine cabinetmakers, and avid do-it-yourselfers will want to keep this blade on hand for those special jobs that call for making smooth crosscuts in fine finish work. Appropriate application materials include oak, pine, melamine, veneer plywood, and delicate molding.

Produces Smooth, Quiet Cuts with Laser-Cut Kerf
The Freud D1060X’s clean-cutting design means that you can enjoy the comfort of smooth performance. The thin 0.98-inch kerf between the blade’s 60 Hi-ATB (alternate-top bevel) teeth is laser cut to provide ease of feed, so you have more control over the blade’s position. This helps maximize both the accuracy of the cut and the efficiency of your work, so you enjoy a job well done and the ability to complete more tasks in less time.

An added bonus, the blade’s laser-cut stabilizer vents reduce noise and vibration during operation, keeping your work environment more relaxed and your hands more in control. This feature also reduces friction and warping, helping to extend the blade’s cutting life.

Features Shock-Resistant Carbide for Long-Lasting Precision
So you can count on it over the long term, the Freud D1060X is designed for durability. The blade’s hardy teeth are protected by Freud’s exclusive shock-resistant TiCo Hi-Density Carbide formula, which helps fight wear and tear and maintains blade sharpness up to four times longer than standard carbide. And protecting the blade is Perma-Shield Non-Stick Coating that provides resistance to heat and corrosion.

Fits Miter and Table Saws
The Freud D1060X is a great addition to your workshop because it’s designed with the versatility to fit a variety of miter and table saws.

This product is covered by Freud’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

This question is both humorious and kinda wise.Look at it this way, your not buying in quanities.Just utilize Home Depot/Lowe’s and save time and trouble.

Some of the blades we use in our saws run up to about $ 800 each, smaller 14″ we can get about $ 170 each buying 6 at a time. Many blades can be used for several different uses, and wet/dry,wet blades last longer.

I just buy mine at HD/Lowe’s (4 1/2″ blades) and deal with it.

Good Luck

Where to get old worn out 12″, 14″, or 16″ saw blades.?
I ask this question the other day and got flagged for it so I will change the wording. ??????
I want to make a set of disc to pull behind a lawn/garden tractor, from old sawblades from a table saw, for a small garden tractor and I need 6 or 8 of one size old blades to do so with. If I could put together 6 to 8 of one size on each axle I could move up on the size of the next axle if I needed to.
I guess I could even use a row of 10″ blades in the front.
Does anyone know of a shop or anywhere that may have them they would give away or sell cheap.
I’m scared to say anything else or they may jerk this one off too.

Suggestion by Kathy A
Have you tried second hand stores or people who sharpen blades for a living ??? (antique stores ???) farmers that have old stuff in sheds ???

Suggestion by plt196145
try at your local flea market, theres always a junk dealer there. im one myself.

Suggestion by Joe B
yard/ garage sales seem like a good place to start.

Suggestion by thewrangler_sw
Your best source for the quantity and size blades you want, will be cabinet shops, or blade sharpening businesses.

The typical yard sale will usually only have 7.25″ blades.

You can check your local business pages for blade sharpening, or cabinet manufacturing businesses.

I would also suggest a walk thru a couple of nearby junkyards, you may find something of use there.
